D3 is the unit that decides most Diplomas. It is the largest, the most heavily weighted, and the one candidates most often resit, because there is no way to bluff a question about Wachau’s categories or the permitted white grapes in a Cote-Rotie.

These 35 questions are drawn at random from a bank spanning Bordeaux to Central Otago. Expect classification detail, appellation law, and style drivers rather than “which grape grows where”.

Common questions

What does WSET Diploma D3 cover?

D3 is Wines of the World: the still wines of every major producing region, examined through appellation law, classification, climate and site, viticultural and winemaking practice, and the resulting styles. It is the largest unit of the Diploma and carries the heaviest weighting.

How should I structure D3 revision?

By region, in blocks, with recall testing at the end of each block rather than at the end of everything. The failure mode is reading all of France, moving on to Italy, and finding that Bordeaux has evaporated. Regular retrieval practice on regions you covered weeks ago is what makes the material stick.

Is the D3 exam multiple choice?

No. D3 is assessed by written theory papers combining short-answer and essay questions, plus a blind tasting paper. Multiple-choice drilling secures the facts you need, but you also have to practice writing structured answers under exam timing.
