D1 is the unit everything else in the Diploma stands on. Every D3 answer about why a Barossa Shiraz tastes the way it does is really a D1 answer about climate, canopy, and extraction wearing a regional costume.

These questions sit at Diploma depth: not what malolactic conversion is, but why a producer would block it in an aromatic white and encourage it in a barrel-fermented Chardonnay. Explanations on every answer.

Common questions

What does WSET Diploma D1 cover?

D1 is Wine Production: the vineyard (soil, climate, vine physiology, disease, rootstocks, canopy management, yield, harvest decisions) and the winery (must adjustments, pressing, yeast, fermentation, extraction, malolactic conversion, oak, lees, oxygen management, sulfur dioxide, fining, filtration, stabilization, packaging, and faults).

How is D1 assessed?

D1 is examined by a written theory paper of short-answer and essay-style questions rather than multiple choice. Multiple-choice drilling like this is not a substitute for essay practice, but it is the fastest way to find the mechanisms you cannot yet explain, and you cannot write about what you cannot recall.

Is D1 harder than Level 3 winemaking?

Yes, by a clear step. Level 3 asks what a process does. D1 asks what is happening chemically or biologically, why a producer would choose one option over another, and what the trade-off costs them.
