Level 3 does not reward knowing that oak adds vanilla. It rewards knowing which oak, seasoned how, in what size vessel, and what that choice does to a wine’s texture and aging curve. This is the half of the syllabus every essay leans on, whichever region the question happens to name.

The quiz draws from the combined viticulture and winemaking banks: climate and site, canopy management and yield, harvest decisions, pre-fermentation and fermentation choices, maturation and oak, and the specialist techniques.

Common questions

What is the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 winemaking questions?

Level 2 asks what a process does. Level 3 asks why a producer would choose it and what the alternative would have given instead. A Level 2 question might ask what malolactic conversion does; a Level 3 question asks why a producer would block it in an aromatic white but encourage it in a Chardonnay.

Is this enough to prepare for the theory paper?

It is the right drilling for the recall half. The Level 3 theory paper also asks for written short-answer responses where you have to justify a choice in prose, so pair this with essay practice and the [Level 3 cheatsheet](/wset/level-3/cheatsheet/).

How much of Level 3 is viticulture and vinification?

Enough that it is the wrong place to economize. Even the regional questions are usually asking you to connect a growing condition or a winemaking decision to a style, so weakness here shows up across the whole paper rather than in one section.
