Level 2 SAT

WSET Level 2 Tasting Sheet: Free Interactive SAT Grid

Free WSET Level 2 SAT tasting sheet. Fill in the grid on screen, build a structured note from your calls, then print the blank version. No sign-up.

The Systematic Approach to Tasting is the part of WSET that keeps working long after you have forgotten which subzone of Rioja is which. It is a discipline, not a vocabulary list, and the only way to build it is to fill the same grid in over and over until the order of the calls stops requiring thought.

Choose white or red below, work down the sheet, and it assembles a structured note from your calls. Print it blank for a flight, or fill it in as you taste and print the result.

How to use it

Work top to bottom and do not skip back. The order is deliberate: appearance sets your expectations, the nose narrows them, the palate confirms or overturns them, and the conclusion is the only place you are allowed to guess.

Two habits separate people who improve from people who plateau. The first is calling out loud before you write, because your first instinct is usually right and your second is usually a negotiation. The second is tasting the same wine twice a week apart, once with the label covered and once with it showing, so you learn where your palate and your expectations disagree.

When you are ready for the longer grid, the Level 3 tasting sheet adds development, aroma categories, and the readiness call. If you are studying for the Court of Master Sommeliers as well, the deductive tasting grid is the same exercise with a different destination.

Common questions

What is the WSET Level 2 tasting sheet?

It is the Systematic Approach to Tasting at Level 2: a fixed sequence of calls across appearance, nose, palate, and conclusion, each with a set vocabulary. Its purpose is consistency. Two people using it properly on the same wine should produce recognizably similar notes, which is what makes it markable.

How is the Level 2 SAT different from Level 3?

Level 2 is shorter and uses simpler scales. Level 3 adds intensity and development on the nose, separates primary, secondary, and tertiary aromas, splits tannin into level and nature, and asks for a readiness-for-drinking call with reasons. The Level 3 sheet is a genuine step up in both length and precision.

Is tasting examined at WSET Level 2?

The Level 2 qualification is assessed by a 50-question multiple-choice paper, so there is no separate tasting exam. Tasting is still taught and still examined indirectly: questions about a wine's style, structure, and likely origin are far easier to answer if you have been tasting systematically all along.

Can I print this as a blank sheet?

Yes. The print button strips the site chrome and leaves the grid, so it prints as a clean sheet you can put in front of a flight. Your browser's print dialog will also save it as a PDF.

What are the SAT sweetness terms at Level 2?

Dry, off-dry, medium, and sweet. Level 3 expands this to dry, off-dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet, sweet, and luscious. Sticking to the exact terms matters more than it sounds: the SAT is a controlled vocabulary, and words from outside it earn nothing.
