Level 1 is a foundations exam, and the foundation is style: what makes a wine still, sparkling, or fortified, what makes it red rather than white, and what the words on the back label are actually telling you.

This quiz drills that core, drawn from the wine styles and key concepts banks. It is the fastest way to find out whether you can skip straight to Level 2.

Common questions

Is WSET Level 1 hard?

No, and it is not meant to be. It is an introduction, designed to be passed after a day of teaching and a little revision. The pass mark is 70%, and the questions test recognition and basic understanding rather than detail. If you score well here without studying, consider starting at Level 2 instead.

What does WSET Level 1 actually cover?

The main types of wine, the principal grape varieties and what they taste like, how wine is made in outline, how to store and serve it, the basics of food and wine pairing, and how to describe a wine using a simple structured method.

Should I take Level 1 or go straight to Level 2?

Level 1 is not a prerequisite for Level 2. If you already drink wine attentively and can name what most of the classic grapes taste like, Level 2 is usually the better use of your money. If wine is genuinely new to you, Level 1 makes Level 2 much less overwhelming.
