Grape varieties are the biggest single bank in the Level 1 syllabus, and the questions follow one simple pattern: which grape gives you this style of wine? Citrus and green apple with high acidity points one way, blackcurrant with firm tannin points another, and the exam expects those links to come without effort.

This quiz drills exactly that, drawn from a bank of 47 audited variety questions. When the classic markers feel automatic, take the full mock exam to see the score move, or switch to the wine styles quiz to cover the other half of the foundations.

Common questions

Which grape varieties does WSET Level 1 cover?

A short list of principal varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling for the whites, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, also sold as Shiraz, for the reds. Level 1 asks you to link each one to its typical flavours, its body and acidity, and a classic region or two, nothing deeper than that.

Is this the same as the full Level 1 mock exam?

It draws from the same audited question bank, but filtered to grape varieties only. The full mock exam samples the whole syllabus at the real exam's length. Use this quiz to fix a specific weakness and the mock exam to measure whether you fixed it.

What score means I am ready?

Consistently above 80% here means grape varieties are no longer costing you marks, comfortably clear of the 70% pass mark. Below that, read the variety table on the Level 1 cheatsheet first, because more repetitions will not teach you material you have not yet met.
