West Elks is a high-elevation AVA in Colorado’s North Fork Valley around Hotchkiss and Paonia.
An alpine-desert environment brings warm days, cool nights and regular breezes to the West Elks. The landscape combines agricultural benches, volcanic mesas and an alluvial valley floor beneath mountain peaks. This is a separate growing area from Colorado’s Grand Valley AVA. Its geographical name helps place a wine within the North Fork Valley, while the fruit source and grape variety of any individual bottle still need to be checked on their own evidence.
