Walla Walla Valley spans southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon within Columbia Valley.
The growing environment changes across Walla Walla Valley as rainfall increases toward the Blue Mountains. Sandy loess and basalt occur alongside the cobbled former riverbed of the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater on the Oregon side. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are documented regional plantings. This range of landforms and moisture means a single valley name can encompass quite different vineyard settings. The appellation belongs to both states, even when a winery’s address is on only one side of the border.
