Texas Hill Country spans central Texas and contains the smaller Bell Mountain and Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country AVAs.
Rolling central Texas terrain connects a broad growing area with two separately named AVAs inside its boundaries. Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country is the official name of one of those smaller areas. Warm conditions and humidity make vineyard site and grape choice consequential. Documented regional plantings include Tempranillo, Tannat, Aglianico and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre are also documented at Loyal Valley Vineyard. Black Spanish, also called Lenoir, has a place in the Hill Country too; Texas A&M describes its tolerance of Pierce’s disease. A tasting-room location alone does not establish where a wine’s grapes were grown.
