Texas High Plains occupies elevated, largely level terrain near Lubbock in northwestern Texas.
The High Plains offers a different growing environment from central Texas. High elevation and relatively dry conditions distinguish this AVA, while the open terrain exposes vineyards to hail and spring frost. Growers document Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Roussanne. These examples describe grapes grown within the appellation; they do not mean that every wine sold by a nearby winery uses High Plains fruit.
