Savennières is a small but revered appellation in the Anjou district of the Loire Valley, just south-west of the city of Angers. On steep, south-facing slopes above the right bank of the Loire, it produces dry white wine exclusively from Chenin Blanc, and at its best it ranks among the greatest and longest-lived expressions of that grape anywhere in the world.
Terroir
The appellation covers only around 150 hectares. Its vineyards sit on hard, well-drained soils of schist, sandstone, and volcanic rock, with patches of blue-grey slate. These poor soils, combined with excellent sun exposure and warm, dry breezes, stress the vines and concentrate the fruit. The result is wine of remarkable intensity, minerality, and structure.
The Wines
Young Savennières can be tightly wound and austere, showing quince, green apple, chamomile, and a distinctive waxy, lanolin note. With age, often a decade or more, it unfolds into something profound, gaining honey, dried apricot, and smoky mineral complexity while retaining its bracing acidity. These are food wines built for the cellar rather than easy early drinking.
Top Crus
Within Savennières lie two celebrated cru appellations. La Coulée de Serrant is a single seven-hectare estate, effectively a monopole farmed by Nicolas Joly, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture whose work drew global attention to the region. Neighbouring La Roche aux Moines is a slightly larger cru producing wines of similar power and depth. Both command premium prices and reward patient cellaring.
Serving Savennières
Serve it cool rather than cold, around 12 degrees Celsius, and give young bottles time in a decanter to open up. It pairs superbly with rich seafood, roast chicken, pork, and mature hard cheeses.
