Russian River Valley is a Sonoma County appellation shaped by Pacific cooling.
Fog and marine air help distinguish Russian River Valley from warmer inland parts of Sonoma County. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are documented regional grapes. Vineyard environments still vary: Goldridge loam, clay-rich hills and alluvial benchlands appear in producer accounts of the area. These soils are examples of its diversity rather than a single recipe for the entire AVA. Smaller place names and individual vineyard locations can add useful context to the broader Russian River Valley designation.
