Old Mission Peninsula extends between the two arms of Grand Traverse Bay in northern Michigan.
The surrounding waters help extend the autumn growing season and keep spring temperatures cool. That moderation supports grape cultivation in a cool northern setting without removing vintage-to-vintage weather risk. The local association discusses Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris among harvested varieties. Harvest timing depends on the vineyard, the grape and the intended wine style; a late-harvest wine and a sparkling wine need not be picked at the same point in the season.
