New York’s Niagara Escarpment AVA occupies part of Niagara County near Lake Ontario.
Lake Ontario and the escarpment work together to moderate this western New York growing area. The escarpment’s terrain supports air movement, while the nearby lake influences seasonal temperatures. Gravelly limestone and clay-loam soils are described in the regional reference guide. This AVA is on the United States side of the border; it is distinct from the similarly named Canadian appellation. A broader Niagara wine-trail listing alone is not proof that a vineyard lies inside this AVA.
