Monticello is a central Virginia AVA covering parts of five counties around the Charlottesville area.
Monticello’s modern vineyards belong to a region with a much older history of experimentation. Thomas Jefferson attempted to establish vineyards at Monticello, but repeated replanting reflects the difficulty of those efforts. Today, documented estate plantings within the AVA include Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. At King Family Vineyards, dyke-loam over iron-rich clay is a specific soil example, not a description of every Monticello vineyard. Site details are particularly useful when comparing wines from this broad appellation.
