Mimbres Valley follows floodplain and terrace land in Grant and Luna counties in New Mexico.
The Mimbres Valley AVA covers a broader floodplain downstream from the narrow upper river channel. Its establishment evidence distinguishes gently sloping agricultural land from surrounding mountain areas. Sandy to loamy alluvium is an important soil feature. The appellation is therefore a specific river-valley place, not a synonym for all of southwestern New Mexico. Historical establishment documents explain its geography but do not establish today’s grape mix.
