The Loire Valley, stretching 1,000 kilometers along France’s longest river, represents one of the world’s most diverse and enchanting wine regions. From the flinty Sauvignon Blancs of Sancerre in the east to the briny Muscadets of Nantes in the west, the Loire offers an extraordinary range of wines unified by freshness, elegance, and exceptional food-friendliness.
A River of Wine
The Loire River and its tributaries create a remarkable diversity of microclimates and terroirs. This variety allows the region to excel with multiple grape varieties and wine styles, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, still to sparkling. The river also moderates temperatures and provides the humidity necessary for noble rot in great vintage years.
The Four Loire Regions
The Loire Valley is divided into four main areas:
Pays Nantais
At the river’s mouth near the Atlantic, producing crisp Muscadet from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. These wines are perfect with oysters and shellfish.
Anjou-Saumur
The heart of Chenin Blanc country, producing everything from dry Savennieres to sweet Coteaux du Layon, plus excellent sparkling Cremant de Loire.
Touraine
Home to Vouvray’s legendary Chenin Blancs and the elegant Cabernet Franc reds of Chinon and Bourgueil.
Centre-Loire
Where Sauvignon Blanc reaches its purest expression in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, with mineral-driven wines of precision and purity.
Key Grape Varieties
The Loire showcases several important varieties:
- Chenin Blanc - The region’s most versatile grape, from dry to sweet
- Sauvignon Blanc - Crisp, mineral expressions that differ from New World styles
- Cabernet Franc - Elegant, perfumed reds ideal with food
- Melon de Bourgogne - The grape behind Muscadet’s bracing freshness

- Sancerre - Domaine Vacheron, Francois Cotat
- Vouvray - Domaine Huet, Francois Chidaine
- Savennieres - Nicolas Joly, Domaine des Baumard
