Lodi lies inland from San Francisco Bay, where marine breezes reach a diverse landscape of plains and terraces.
Warm dry summers do not tell the whole Lodi story. Pacific air moves inland through the Bay and Delta waterways, cooling vineyards during the growing season. Rivers draining the Sierra Nevada have helped form alluvial soils, while eastern parts of the region include older clay-rich and stony ground. Fine sandy loam around Lodi is associated with longstanding Zinfandel vineyards. The AVA’s soil and terrain differences also underpin its smaller named appellations.
