Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country is the full official AVA name for this part of Gillespie County.
This is a federally defined growing area inside Texas Hill Country, rather than an alternative name for the whole Hill Country. Its full name preserves that relationship and distinguishes the appellation from the town of Fredericksburg. Alluvial deposits and iron-rich clay occur in the area. A winery in town may work with grapes from several growing regions, so the town name and a vineyard origin should be read separately.
