Finger Lakes is a cool New York AVA whose deep lakes moderate nearby vineyard temperatures.
The lakes help make grape growing possible in a region with cold winters, but their influence changes with distance, slope and airflow. Even neighboring sites can differ in exposure and temperature. Riesling is well documented, alongside Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake are smaller AVAs inside Finger Lakes; they provide a more specific location when shown on a wine label. Vineyard origin remains more informative than a winery’s mailing address.
