Australia’s Wine Icon

The Barossa Valley stands as Australia’s most celebrated wine region, famous for producing some of the world’s most powerful and concentrated Shiraz wines. Located just an hour from Adelaide in South Australia, Barossa combines Old World tradition with New World innovation.

Ancient Vines

Barossa’s greatest asset is its old vines. Some Shiraz vines date to the 1840s - among the oldest in the world. These ancient plants, having survived phylloxera that devastated European vineyards, produce intensely concentrated fruit.

The Barossa Shiraz Style

Barossa Shiraz is bold and unapologetic:

  • Deep, inky color
  • Intense blackberry and plum fruit
  • Dark chocolate and espresso notes
  • Firm but ripe tannins
  • Often high alcohol (14-15%+)

German Heritage

German Lutheran settlers established Barossa in the 1840s, and their influence remains. Many of the oldest wineries bear German names, and traditional food pairings reflect this heritage.

Beyond Shiraz

While Shiraz dominates, Barossa also produces excellent:

  • Grenache: Old vine examples rival the Rhone
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Powerful and structured
  • Riesling: From the neighboring Eden Valley (technically a sub-region)

Notable Producers

From historic estates like Penfolds and Henschke to boutique producers, Barossa offers wines at every price point.
