Augusta is a Missouri River wine-growing area west of St. Louis and the first federally established AVA.
German immigrants developed vineyards in this Missouri River area during the nineteenth century. Augusta later became the first American Viticultural Area, preceding Napa Valley in the federal register. The regional wine board documents an Augusta estate-bottled Norton, giving a specific local example of this American grape. Neither that example nor Augusta’s historical status defines the taste or quality of every wine from the appellation.
