Alcohol carries 7 kcal per gram and residual sugar 4; the label's ABV decides most of the count.

The honest arithmetic

Wine labels tell you the alcohol but almost never the calories, and the two are nearly the same fact. Alcohol carries 7 calories per gram, close to double what sugar does, so a wine’s ABV decides most of its count. The rest comes from residual sugar, which is why a bone-dry Brut Nature and a demi-sec from the same house can sit forty calories apart on the same shelf.

What the numbers mean

This calculator works from the actual physics: pour size, alcohol by volume, and the sugar left after fermentation. It reports UK units, where one unit is 10 ml of pure alcohol, and US standard drinks of 14 grams each, because the two systems disagree just enough to be confusing. If you are choosing between styles, the pattern is simple: lightness follows alcohol, not colour. When the count matters, pour the 125 ml glass, pick the 11 percent bottle, and make it one you will actually remember. Our pairing finder can help make the one glass count.

Frequently asked.

01.
How many calories are in a bottle of wine?
+
A 750 ml bottle of dry wine at 13 percent ABV carries roughly 560 calories, almost all of it from the alcohol itself. Sweet styles add more through residual sugar, and a fortified wine like Port can pass 800 calories a bottle.
02.
Where do wine calories come from?
+
Alcohol first: it carries 7 calories per gram, nearly double that of sugar. Residual sugar adds 4 calories per gram on top, which is why an off-dry Riesling can be lighter than a powerful dry red. Fat and protein are essentially absent.
03.
How many units are in a glass of wine?
+
One UK unit is 10 ml of pure alcohol. A 175 ml glass at 13 percent ABV is about 2.3 units; a full bottle is just under 10. A US standard drink is 14 g of alcohol, so the same bottle holds about 5.5 standard drinks.
04.
Which wine styles are lowest in calories?
+
Lower alcohol means fewer calories, almost regardless of colour. A dry 11 percent Vinho Verde or a brut sparkling sits at the light end; big 15 percent reds and sweet fortified wines sit at the heavy end.
