What is a drinking window?

Every wine has a stretch of years when it shows its best: after its structure has softened and its aromas have opened, and before the fruit starts to fade. That stretch is the drinking window. Inside it sits a shorter band, the peak, when the wine is at its absolute best. Drink a serious red too early and you get grip without charm; leave a delicate white too long and the freshness that made it worth buying is gone.

How this checker works

Type the wine, confirm the bottling you mean, and pick the vintage. Our AI weighs the things that actually decide longevity: tannin structure, acidity, sweetness, concentration, oak treatment, the grape’s typical aging curve, and the quality of that vintage in that region. Well-known wines come back with high confidence and a tight window; obscure bottles get a wider, honest estimate instead of false precision.

Reading the result

Drink from is when the bottle stops being a waste to open. The peak band is where you want most of your bottles to land. Drink by is not a cliff, a well-stored bottle is often still enjoyable a little past it, but it is the point after which the wine only loses. Curious how the year itself rated? Run the region through our vintage checker, or let the Sommo app track the window of everything you scan.

Frequently asked.

01.
What is a wine drinking window?
+
A drinking window is the stretch of years when a wine shows its best: after its structure has softened and its aromas have opened, and before the fruit starts to fade. Inside it sits the peak, a shorter band when the wine is at its absolute best.
02.
How accurate is the estimate?
+
For well-known wines and vintages the window comes back with high confidence and a tight range. For obscure bottles the tool deliberately widens the range and marks the confidence low rather than inventing false precision. Every estimate also passes a plausibility check calibrated against how retail wines actually age.
03.
What if my wine is past its drink-by year?
+
Drink by is not a cliff. A well-stored bottle is often still enjoyable a little past it, especially reds with good structure. It is the point after which the wine only loses, so open it sooner rather than later.
04.
Does the tool work for non-vintage wines?
+
Not yet. Non-vintage Champagne, sherry, and most supermarket blends are built for consistency rather than aging, so the honest answer for most of them is simply: drink within a year or two of buying.
