Vranac is a red grape variety, with its roots in Montenegro.
The wines show medium-full body, high tannin, medium acidity, dry and high alcohol.
The tasting note runs to sour cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate, mint and vanilla.
It is planted most seriously in Montenegro and North Macedonia.
In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening, vigorous vigour and a preference for dry, difficult growing conditions.
It blends readily with Primitivo.
On other labels it goes by Vranec.
At the table it suits goulash, beef ribs with barbeque sauce and hard sheep’s milk cheeses.
