Tinta Barroca is a red grape variety, with its roots in Douro, Portugal.

The wines show medium-full body, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry and medium alcohol.

The tasting note runs to ripe blackberry, plum, cherry, spice, earth and herbal.

It is planted most seriously in Douro and Swartland.

In the vineyard it is marked by mid ripening, high vigour and a preference for cooler, higher slopes.

It blends readily with Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Pinotage.

On other labels it goes by Tinta Barocca and Boca de Mina.

At the table it suits rump steak with grilled vegetables, churrasco beef and slow-roasted pork shoulder.
