The wines show full body, high tannin, medium acidity, dry and high alcohol.

The tasting note runs to plum, blackberry, raisin, pepper and spice.

It is planted most seriously in California.

In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening, medium vigour and a preference for warm climates.

It blends readily with Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.
