Syrah - Viognier is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Rhone Valley, France.
The wines show full body, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to apricot, ripe peach, spice, plum, floral and fruity.
It is planted most seriously in Cote Rotie, Barossa Valley, Yarra Valley and Santa Barbara County.
In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening, medium to high vigour and a preference for warm climates.
It blends readily with Grenache, Mourvèdre, Marsanne and Roussanne.
On other labels it goes by Shiraz and Syrah-Viognier.
At the table it suits salt-crusted pork with gnocchi in sage butter, lamb with apricot and walnut stuffing and slow-cooked beef casserole.
