The wines show full body, medium-high tannin, medium acidity, dry and high alcohol.
The tasting note runs to blueberries, blackcurrants, black cherries, chocolate, pepper and spice.
In the cellar it meets new oak.
It is planted most seriously in Rhône Valley, Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and Walla Walla Valley.
In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening, vigorous vigour and a preference for warm to temperate.
It blends readily with Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.

At the table it suits grilled red meats, game birds, cured meats, goat-based stew and eggnplant lasagna.
