Schiava is a red grape variety, with its roots in Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy.
The wines show light body, low tannin, medium acidity, dry and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to cherry, raspberry, floral and herbal.
It is planted most seriously in Trentino and Alto Adige.
In the vineyard it is marked by early ripening, moderate vigour and a preference for cool.
On other labels it goes by Grauvernatsch, Kleinvernatsch, Grossvernatsch and Schiava Grigia.
At the table it suits tirolese canederli, baked ham and mature pecorino cheese.
