South Africa’s Original Grape

Pinotage is a uniquely South African grape variety, created in 1925 by Professor Abraham Izak Perold at Stellenbosch University, crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault (then called Hermitage in South Africa). This crossing aimed to combine Pinot Noir’s elegance with Cinsault’s heat tolerance, creating a variety perfectly suited to the Cape. Today Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, and modern producers have transformed its reputation from rustic and divisive to genuinely fine and age-worthy.

  • Fruit: Red plum, raspberry, mulberry, banana (in some styles)
  • Secondary: Smoke, coffee, tar, dark chocolate
