Mourvedre - Syrah is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Southern France, France.
The wines show full body, medium-high tannin, medium acidity, dry and high alcohol.
The tasting note runs to damson plum, blackcurrant, leather, dried herbs, pepper and spice.
In the cellar it meets american oak.
It is planted most seriously in Rhône Valley, Languedoc, Provence and Barossa Valley.
In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening, low vigour and a preference for hot, dry climate.
It blends readily with Grenache and Syrah.
On other labels it goes by Monastrell and Mataro.
At the table it suits ratatouille, five-spice pork belly and barbecued t-bone steak.
