Montepulciano - Sangiovese is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Marche, Italy.
The wines show medium body, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to dark fruit, dried herbs, earth, rustic and expressive.
It is planted most seriously in Marche and Abruzzo.
In the vineyard it is marked by mid ripening, moderate vigour and a preference for temperate.
It blends readily with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
On other labels it goes by Montepulciano and Sangiovese.
At the table it suits sausage and bean stew, braised-beef tacos and spaghetti and meatballs in tomato sauce.
