Monastrell - Tempranillo is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Valencia, Spain.
The wines show medium-full body, medium-high tannin, medium acidity, dry and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to black fruit, tobacco, chocolate and spice.
It is planted most seriously in Valencia, Jumilla and Alicante.
In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening and a preference for hot, dry conditions.
It blends readily with Garnacha.
On other labels it goes by Mourvèdre.
At the table it suits roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, spanish blood sausage and braised beef with red and green peppers.
