Malvasia Nera is a red grape variety, with its roots in Piedmont, Puglia, Italy.
The wines show medium body, medium-low tannin, medium acidity, varies and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to cherries, plums, aromatic and chocolate.
It is planted most seriously in Piedmont and Puglia.
In the vineyard it is marked by mid ripening, low vigour and a preference for warm, mediterranean climates.
It blends readily with Negroamaro and Sangiovese.
On other labels it goes by Black Malvasia, Malvasia di Brindisi and Malvasia di Lecce.
At the table it suits gnocchi with prunes and parmesan, kangaroo fillet with macadamias, cranberries and pear and roasted duck breast with polenta.
