Grenache - Mourvedre is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Rhone Valley, France.
The wines show full body, medium-high tannin, medium acidity, dry and high alcohol.
The tasting note runs to wild raspberry, blackberry, dark cherry, leathery, pepper and cinnamon.
It is planted most seriously in Provence, Barossa Valley and California.
In the vineyard it is marked by mid ripening, medium vigour and a preference for warm.
It blends readily with Syrah.
On other labels it goes by Garnacha and Monastrell.
At the table it suits rabbit casserole, slow-cooked lamb shanks and sausages and mashed potatoes.
