The wines show medium-full body, medium tannin, high acidity, dry and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to blackberry, spice, earth, savory and earthy.
It is planted most seriously in Aosta Valley and Valais.
In the vineyard it is marked by early ripening, low-maintenance vigour and a preference for cooler alpine environments.
It blends readily with Petit Rouge.
At the table it suits fegato alla paesana, pork sausage with eggplant and aged cows’ milk cheese.
