Carinena - Garnacha is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Catalonia, Spain.
The wines show medium-full body, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry and high alcohol.
The tasting note runs to blackberry, raspberry, cherry, oak, vanilla and coconut.
In the cellar it meets american oak.
It is planted most seriously in Priorat, Montsant and Corbieres.
In the vineyard it is marked by late ripening, moderate vigour and a preference for hot and dry.
It blends readily with Tempranillo.
On other labels it goes by Cariñena - Garnacha and Carignan - Grenache.
At the table it suits roasted, herb-rubbed leg of lamb, shepherd’s pie and sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce.
