Carignan - Syrah is a red blend rather than a single variety, with its roots in Languedoc-Roussillon, France.
The wines show medium-full body, medium-high tannin, medium acidity, dry and medium alcohol.
The tasting note runs to dark berries, savory and smoky.
It is planted most seriously in Priorat and Languedoc-Roussillon.
In the vineyard it is marked by mid ripening, medium vigour and a preference for mediterranean.
It blends readily with Grenache.
On other labels it goes by Cariñena and Mazuelo.
At the table it suits roussillon meatballs in a spiced tomato and green-olive sauce (boles de picolat), osso buco (veal braised in wine) and proscuitto-wrapped lamb cutlets.
