Apple’s first foldable shipped with something rarer than a new hinge: a wave of apps that were actually ready. On 22 and 23 October 2026, Apple published a Made for iPhone Duo roundup, the App Store gained a matching badge, and early hands-on lists from Tom’s Guide, MacRumors and The Verge started naming favourites.
Hardware is only half the story. A foldable earns its keep when the software uses the outer cover, the big inner canvas and tabletop poses on purpose, not as a stretched iPhone layout. That is the bar for this list.
Below are ten apps worth opening first, including Sommo at #4. I put an indie calendar next to the big platforms on purpose: day-one Duo support from smaller teams is where the form factor starts to feel special. One honest note up front: Apple’s published 50+ list and the major launch roundups do not name a wine or cellar app. Sommo’s place here is my own day-one Duo work for collectors, not a claim that Apple, MKBHD or iJustine put Sommo on an official shortlist.

1. Netflix
Browse Clips on the outer display, then open the Duo and keep watching on the large inner screen. In tabletop, playback can sit on the upright half with controls below, the demo Apple led with in its developer story. If you only try one streaming app on launch day, make it this one.

2. Slack
Slack turns the inner display into a proper two-column workspace: channels and people beside the conversation, so you spend less time flipping panes. Tom’s Guide put it at the top of their early picks for good reason: it is the app many people open all day, and Duo finally gives it room.

3. Fantastical
Fantastical is the indie proof that Duo is not only for megacorp apps. Calendars, tasks and menus share the large inner display so your day reads at a glance, closer to the Mac and iPad layout Flexibits already knew how to ship. Apple called it out in the same Newsroom piece; 9to5Mac listed it among the productivity names too.

4. Sommo
If you collect wine, the Duo’s inner canvas is a natural fit: a cellar is a spatial thing, and a journal is easier when history sits beside the note you are writing.
Sommo is a native iOS wine app: scanner, 3D cellar, journal, palate, tasting and WSET study, rebuilt with adaptive two-column layouts for iPhone Duo (the same roomier shells also help on iPad). Unfolded, you can keep the cellar list beside the wine wall, journal entries beside history, and wine details beside the region map. On the outer display, Today, quick scan and palate views stay one-handed. Same Premium from $4.99/month; WSET Level 1 stays free, with Levels 2 to 4 on Premium.
I shipped Duo-ready layouts with the current App Store build so collectors were not waiting for “someday.” Apple’s Made for iPhone Duo roundup does not currently include a wine or cellar title. That gap is exactly why I care about this form factor. See how it looks on /iphone-duo/, or go straight to the App Store.

5. Zoom
Zoom Workplace uses the inner display as a proper conference surface: shared content and participants together, instead of a postage-stamp slide deck. Apple highlighted it alongside Slack in the productivity section of the Duo apps story, useful the first time you take a call with the phone unfolded on a desk.

6. MLB
Propped partly folded, MLB can show the live game on the upright half and real-time stats on the half resting on the table. Apple timed the update with World Series season. Covered in Apple’s Newsroom piece and MacRumors’ summary of the 50+ app list.

7. Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video leans into the partly folded pose: picture on the top half, X-Ray cast and bonus details on the bottom. Another Apple showcase title, and a nice contrast with Netflix’s outer-to-inner Clips flow: different folding tricks for the same big-screen habit.

8. NYT Cooking
Park the Duo on the counter in a partial fold and NYT Cooking gives recipes more room: steps, richer visuals and less phone-in-the-flour juggling. It is the food app Apple named for cook mode; useful context for anyone who wants dinner and a bottle planned in the same evening.

9. Instagram (and Edits)
Instagram shows more posts and Stories on the larger canvas; Edits opens into a split creative studio with timeline and tools in view. Meta was early, and Tom’s Guide liked the immersive scroll, with a caveat: The Verge reported bugs in early Duo testing. Still widely covered; just expect a polish pass.

10. Deck-Man
Not every day-one app has to be serious. Deck-Man turns the Duo into a cassette Walkman: open to pick a tape (via Apple Music), close to play. Apple named it in the indie fun section of the Newsroom story; MacRumors’ fun-apps roundup keeps it on the novelty shortlist. Proof that fold-as-interaction is a design idea, not only a multitasking trick.
What I left out on purpose
Microsoft Word and Outlook are coming with a desktop-class Duo layout in the following weeks, not day-one, per Apple. Zenless Zone Zero and UnGodly are later updates or November launches. Great apps; wrong window for this list.
Creators such as MKBHD and iJustine were talking about the device and asking what to install; I used Apple plus independent press for the ranking, not a single influencer quote as gospel.
Try Sommo on your Duo
If your Duo is already in a jacket pocket next to a wine key, start here: Sommo on the App Store, or read the layout tour on /iphone-duo/. Scanner, cellar, journal and WSET, ready when you unfold.
