ii.When to choose which

Which is right for you?

Choose Sommo

Choose Sommo.

Consider Sommo for remembering wines you taste and connecting your notes with everyday choices. Begin with one saved journal entry. Free journal-history access covers 30 days; access to older journal entries, cellar inventory and cellar pairing require Premium. There is no automatic Oeni transfer promised here.

Choose Oeni

Choose Oeni.

Choose Oeni when its stock, ageing, visual cellar and pairing workflow fit your routine. Its current documentation includes web access, Excel import and an insurance PDF export, so old no-web or no-export claims are not reasons to leave.

Choose an Oeni alternative only after identifying what is missing from your current routine. CellarTracker can suit records beside community notes; InVintory can suit physical storage modelling; Vivino can suit discovery and shopping; Sommo can suit a personal tasting journal connected to Premium cellar tools. If Oeni already solves your main problem, staying is a valid recommendation.

Changing apps has a cost even when the download is free. You may need to match wine identities, rebuild locations, organise old notes and learn a different consumption routine. A worthwhile alternative should improve a repeated task enough to justify that work.

Check what Oeni already offers

Official pages checked on 5 October 2026 describe Oeni as a freemium product with a 30-day Plus trial, stock and ageing tools, food pairing and a 3D cellar. Its current FAQ confirms web access and an Excel-template import. Do not assume it is mobile-only or cannot accept existing records.

Its export help documents an insurance PDF. Current store release notes also describe export location data and a redesigned web experience. We have not established a complete CSV export, the precise free-versus-Plus gates or a generally available current UK or US subscription price. Check those details in your account before deciding that another app is cheaper or more portable.

CellarTracker for records and community reference

CellarTracker combines free inventory with community notes and ratings. Its subscriber tools add features including enhanced windows and CellarChat. It can be a useful alternative if your main frustration is researching a wine alongside a detailed collection record.

Consider the upkeep you want, including location labels and purchase history. You can also consult community notes without moving your stock. See Oeni versus CellarTracker before deciding whether the different record workflow is enough reason to leave.

InVintory for physical storage complexity

InVintory’s current plans include unlimited bottles and CSV export on Free. Premium adds VinLocate 3D and collection analytics. It is worth evaluating when finding bottles in your real storage is the problem you need to solve.

Try an awkward shelf or repeated rack position before recreating the whole collection. Oeni already presents a 3D cellar, so the mere presence of 3D is not the deciding difference. Check how each represents your storage and handles a moved bottle. If your locations are already obvious, a new model may add work without helping.

Vivino for discovering the next purchase

Vivino’s current feature guide describes community ratings, taste matching, cellar tools and a merchant marketplace. It is relevant when unfamiliar labels and shopping are the recurring task. It also has owned-cellar features, so this is not a choice between stock management and no stock management.

Keep discovery separate from your inventory decision. Vivino may work as a reference beside Oeni without creating a second stock record. The Oeni versus Vivino comparison explains that division of roles and the entitlement details worth checking.

Sommo for your own tasting memory

Sommo is worth a small evaluation if you struggle to remember wines you liked or retrieve your own observations. Save a wine you actually tasted, including the occasion and a short note, then see whether you can find it again when choosing a similar bottle.

Free journal-history access covers 30 days; access to older entries requires Premium. Cellar inventory and cellar pairing are also Premium features. Do not choose Sommo expecting unlimited free stock management or an automatic import from Oeni. Begin with the tasting-note workflow and assess its usefulness before considering any collection move.

Make the evaluation small and reversible

Imagine two standard bottles of a red, a magnum of that wine and one white with a private note. Put the standard reds in different locations. This synthetic sample exposes more than a simple list of four bottles.

Confirm wine identity, vintage and size; move one bottle; record one opening; retrieve the note; then inspect an export. Note every field you have had to recreate or simplify. A correct stock total can still conceal a lost location, purchase currency or note.

Keep an untouched Oeni backup. An insurance PDF may be useful for reading your records but should not be assumed to import as structured rows. Ask the receiving product which format and fields it accepts, and verify that against a sample rather than converting the whole collection immediately.

Use one authoritative stock record while evaluating another tool. Stay with Oeni if it remains dependable; switch only when the missing job is solved and the preservation trade-offs are acceptable. If tasting memory is that job, save one wine in Sommo and revisit the decision after using the note again.

Or try both

Try Sommo, free.

Begin with a wine in the free journal. Cellar inventory and pairing, plus access to older journal history, require Premium. Check your local subscription offer before choosing.
